Busey Group secures grant for Riverside Indian School
September 9, 2005
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Busey Group has announced the award of a three-year NASA Grant
for development of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) curriculum
and programming for underserved American Indian students at Riverside Indian School
in Anadarko.
The NASA grant was one of three awarded out of 38 applications.
The “Achievement of Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
grant” has been awarded to the Caddo Kiowa Technology Center in Fort Cobb.
Caddo Kiowa will act as the primary facilitator for the NASA grant.
The Busey Group assembled a distinguished team to perform the requirements. Participants
are Caddo Kiowa Technology Center, Riverside Indian School, Oklahoma Department
of Career and Technology Education, Southwest Oklahoma State University, American
University, Anadarko Industries, Inc. and The Busey Group.
The Busey Group has been selected to coordinate the NASA diversity outreach grant
for Riverside.
“This is a unique and privileged opportunity to put together such a qualified team
to make this grant become real,” said Phil Busey, chairman and CEO of The Busey
Group. “We hope this grant proves successful and becomes a model for future
opportunities for underserved minorities.
“The fact that this was a team approach and has so many organizations working together
is what makes this successful,” Busey said.
The program put in place is designed to stimulate interest and academic achievement
among under-represented students.
“This gives us a great opportunity to serve a deserving group of young people,”
said Jerry Martin, superintendent of Caddo Kiowa. “This grant will help the
students at Riverside make career choices that will better their quality of life
and make society better.”
The goal is to create interest for American Indian Students at Riverside to pursue
college/university programs leading to careers in science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for the students,” said Don Sims, superintendent
of Riverside. “I look forward to putting this into action and helping the
students get good exposure.
“Great things will certainly come of this,” he added.
This will be the second NASA grant coordinated by The Busey Group for Riverside
Indian School. In 2003, the group coordinated “NASA Liftoff to Learning.”
