Busey Group lands former VA director
by Jerry Shottenkirk
The Journal Record
8/10/2005
Charles Nesby, former director of the Veterans Affairs Center for Minority Affairs
in Washington, D.C., has joined Delaware Resource Group of Oklahoma City as vice
president of government contracting, said Philip Busey Jr., vice president of communications
for The Busey Group.
Delaware Resource Group is part of The Busey Group, and Busey said Nesby's experience
in Washington will be an asset to the company, which specializes in minority government
contracts.
Nesby was appointed to the VA position in 2001 by President George W. Bush, and
prior to that post spent 26 years in the U.S. Navy. He made his mark in the Navy
as the first African-American instructor at the Aviation Officer Candidate School
in Pensacola, Fla., and is a graduate of U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, known
as Topgun.
After several tours in F-14 Tomcat fighter squadrons, Nesby was air wing commander
and a major program director for the Naval Air Systems Command.
Nesby's father, Charles Sr., was one of the famous Tuskegee airmen of World War
II.
Nesby, who will be headquartered in Delaware Resource Group's new Washington office,
said he's "excited about the opportunity. DRG has been very successful thus far
and is certainly prepared to move on to the next level of performance."
Busey said Nesby will travel to Oklahoma City as needed. Busey, the son of group
president Phil Busey, said he met Nesby in Washington three years ago.
"He was my mentor when I did my first internship here," Busey said. "He's been a
good friend of the family for some time. He's an impressive individual and I can't
say enough about him."
Nesby is no stranger to Capitol matters. He was primary advisor for the VA on minority
policy issues.
"Everything he's done, he's done well," Busey said. "He's one of those people you
can learn a lot from, and he'll help us in that aspect. We have some young who can
learn what's passed on so we can continue to grow the business and give it long-term
stability."
Nesby brings in a background of management, budgeting, program development, planning,
human resources and equal opportunity issues. A graduate of North Central College
in Naperville, Ill., Nesby was awarded the Navy Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious
Service Medal, the Navy Meitorious Service Medal and Battle Efficiency ribbons.
